New Honda Hybrid Models Bring Efficiency, Excitement

The Honda Motor Company, Ltd., has long been a leader in quality, reliability and efficiency. In recent years, the automaker has improved its efficiency credentials, by releasing one or more hybrid models into the mix. This year, we'll see Honda's product line expand to include additional models that sip less fuel.

What is a hybrid?

Before we look at the new models, we need to first explain what a hybrid is. The auto industry uses the term hybrid to describe vehicles with two very different power sources: one powered by an internal combustion engine such as gas or diesel, the other by electric motors.

Add a lithium-ion or similar battery pack along with related components, and these models run on regular fuel, electricity or a combination of the two depending on the conditions. The result is a far more efficient vehicle with minimal emissions. Typically, a Honda hybrid conserves fuel better and offers more power than a corresponding gas or diesel engine. That's a win-win for consumers!

Honda Accord Hybrid

Shoppers are familiar with the Accord, Honda's roomy and stylish midsize five-passenger sedan. Along with the Civic, these two models have been serving Canadian consumers for more than four decades.   A Honda Accord Hybrid is a conventional hybrid, which means it utilizes a gas engine and two electric motors. Under certain conditions, the electric motor drives the front wheels, otherwise the engine is tasked with that duty. The second motor serves as a generator. This combination delivers a stellar 5.1L/100 km fuel rating.

Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid

You may have heard the Honda Clarity name used before. Previously, it described only a fuel-cell model, a vehicle powered by hydrogen, which produces electricity. An all-new Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) expands that definition to include a new power source.   Like the Honda Accord Hybrid, the Clarity utilizes a gas engine and electric motors. It also goes one step further, by adding a plug-in component. This means the lithium-ion battery pack is larger than the Accord Hybrid's and can rely on both the engine and an outside power source for its electricity. Because it comes with a plug-in outlet, the Clarity can travel as far as 76 kilometres without using any gasoline. Combined with the gas engine and the Clarity's maximum driving range is 547 kilometres. Under optimum conditions, drivers should enjoy an outstanding 2.1 Le/100 km fuel rating.

Another special feature of the Clarity PHEV comes courtesy of your provincial government. For instance, the Ontario Electric Vehicle Incentive Program has incentives ranging from $5,000 to $14,000, depending on the vehicle. Consult with your Lakeshore Honda representative to find out the details.
